Making Sodium Silicate or Water Glass
Making Sodium Silicate or Water Glass You can prepare sodium silicate or water glass from gel beads (silica) and drain cleaner (sodium hydroxide). Sodium silicate can be used to make chemical gardens, like those that result from Magic Rocks, which you can make yourself. Sodium Silicate Materials All you need to make a sodium silicate solution are water, silica, and sodium hydroxide. Silica comes in those little packets labeled Do not eat that you find with electronics, shoes, and other products. Sodium hydroxide is readily available in its pure form or can be found as drain cleaner. 6 g silica gel beads (crushed)4-8 g sodium hydroxide (4 g for water glass, used in the Magic Rock project, or 8 g for the stoichiometric ratio for sodium silicate)10 mL water Prepare Sodium Silicate Wear proper safety gear, which includes gloves.Heat 4 to 8 grams of sodium hydroxide in 10 milliliters of water.Once the sodium hydroxide is dissolved, slowly add 6 grams of crushed silica gel beads. Heat the solution between additions. If the crushed beads wont dissolve, add a little more water to the solution. You now have sodium silicate or water glass. NurdRage has a YouTube video of this procedure if youre interested in seeing how its done.

To what extent is the US dominant in the world Essay
To what extent is the US dominant in the world - Essay Example Therefore the emergence of a global media has enhanced the chances of understanding how international politics across states has expanded and how the same has meant a much better horizon than was imagined by the people in the yesteryears. This paper discusses how the global media has turned in a new leaf within the global political spheres and what this means for the sake of the globalization drive which is rampant all over the world. It is important first and foremost to understand how the international politics are handled by the reins of the global media. There is a dire need to know that the global media comprises of all those actors and stakeholders who are present between the viewers, readers and attention grabbers, and the news-makers. This means that the global media comprises of a number of different people, not all of which represent a singular entity at the same time (Goldberg, 1997). The viewer could be the one who is involved within the dissemination of information or he could be someone who breaks the news to the people spread in different corners of the world. What remains important meanwhile is how well the people have coped up with the pressure realms that has been entrusted upon them, and how adequately appropriate their respective stances have come about within the aegis of the international politics in this day and age. The global media makes sure that the avenues of international politics are kept covered no matter how difficult it is to partake in the entire exercise. The different political events and issues are studied at length, analyzed and discussed for days at stretch. This puts the media persons under a spell because they need to be at their best and give in what is required of them in the long run scheme of things. Their jobs are well cut out because there is a lot of expectation from them, and they must deliver to move ahead in the coming times. The role of the global media is therefore to undertake efforts which shall give mileag e to international politics, its relevant actors, stakeholders, the end beneficiaries and so on. This is an interesting understanding because the global media has to be on its feet at all times and manifest its truest basis consistently. This has been proven with solid research and experience that has come to the fore regarding the global media and its linkage with the international political forces (Semati, 2004). The understanding of international politics has been there because this entity has been under discussion in nearly all spheres of life. This implicates for the excessive use of the international political manifestations within the lives of the citizens of the land, and in nearly all their undertakings ââ¬â all of which are centered on the premise of bringing in sanity within the related ranks. The international political understandings have been supplemented with the ideology of the global media coming to their rescue. This has essentially meant that the political det ails regarding different parties, groups and factions has generally been made stronger with the changing times, and the emphasis of the same has rested on the shoulders of the ones who are running the global media domains. It is a fact that the political manifestations of the present times have relied staunchly on the hiring of the right people who could convey
Efficent Business Communications Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words
Efficent Business Communications - Essay Example It is therefore imperative that companies embrace the aspect of inter-cultural communication in order for them to be ranked globally. For business communication to be termed effective, it has to put into consideration the aspects of diversity and cultural awareness. At the work place, if these are upheld, the company will register greater productivity and smooth workflow. Therefore, cultural diversity and appreciation of diversity must be applied in business communication to ensure effectiveness. One of the reasons why companies need to embrace cultural awareness and appreciation of diversity in the course of their communication is because of the most recent advanced communication forms. The presence of the internet helps companies, including the locals and multinationals to interact with their local and international clients. Since these clients are of different cultural backgrounds, if the said company lacks the elements of cultural awareness and diversity appreciation in its commu nication plan, then such is likely to miss many profits due to the ineffective communication between it and its local and international clients (Gibson 2002). ... It is crucial that companies uphold cultural awareness and diversity because of the various benefits it presents. First, business communication keeps evolving because of the globalization concept that has brings world business cultures together. New economies ape and integrate aspects of organizational cultures of the stronger and established companies in some of the worldââ¬â¢s influential nations. Both small and big businesses must uphold cultural diversity in their business communication plan, starting from the corporate boardrooms to employee break-rooms, they should understand the eccentricities of all cultures to which they are exposed (Okpara 2008). The perceptions in different native cultures have a great influence on language use. Therefore, people belonging to different cultural groups will tend to have a varied understanding of words in a language. In the workplace, employees therefore need to be extra-cautious to ensure that their messages are understood clearly, as th ey communicate with workers of different cultural backgrounds. Employees should avoid taboo topics while conversing. Additionally, different biases in religious aspects, political aspects, or social issues and nuances of life experiences differ between cultures, making it a challenge for employees to find a common ground while communicating. Additionally, different cultures have different ways of addressing and managing conflicts. A case in perspective is that in Netherlands, arguments are regarded as an ingredient for a healthy conversation and communication. On the contrary, people from Japan consider public arguments and disagreements as offensive.

Oslo Peace Initiative Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words
Oslo Peace Initiative - Essay Example For the Palestinians, the peace agreement of Israel with Egypt served to increase their desperation. This led to the intensification of struggle by the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) under Yassir Arafat. Though the United States entered the scene and made it a personal agenda to restore peace in the Middle East, only limited progress was made in the 1978 Camp David negotiations because of mutual distrust and suspicion between the two parties. Even though this eventually brought about the 1979 Israel-Egypt Peace Treaty, dissatisfaction and stalemate in the situation led to the First Intifadaor the Arab Revolt in 1987-91 in Gaza Strip and West Bank. There was change in leadership in Israel and Yitzhak reversed his nation's stand and tried to negotiate with the PLO and participated in the secret talks in Oslo, Norway (MERIP 2006:3); as the result Israel-PLO Declaration of Principles, was signed in Washington in September 1993, which is otherwise known as the Oslo Accord. Through this PLO recognized Israel and Israel the authority of PLO. It is clear from the above that, suspicion and mistrust ruled high here from the beginning. The main issue of contention was not one of religion, but more an issue of home-land. The Palestinians needed more areas for their large population, who had lost their homes during the wars and were living as refugees elsewhere. In one estimate their numbers were close to three million (MERIP 2006: 6). The entitlement status to be given to the Palestinians and the treatment of Israeli settlements (Israel evacuated all Israelites from the West Bank and Gaza Strip over the next few years) were other significantly unresolved issues that led to frustration. Rights to the Jordan River waters, on which was another important reason for animosity. Finally, Jerusalem with its historical places of worship was also a point of dispute, with both sides refusing to give up claim (Mideastweb 2006:1). While the Israelites consider Jerusalem as their "eternal capital" ((MERIP 2006:8), Arabs also want it as their capital because of its association with Prophet Mohammed. According to some, in first place the agreement itself was "deeply flawed" because it did not find many takers in the Arab nations (MERIP 2006:3). Importantly, the accord did not find support amongst the radical Islamist leaders in the two strategic places of Gaza Strip and West Bank. The infighting in the Palestinian camp, spurts of violence of the HAMAS and Jihad, ensured that the Oslo Peace Initiative was hardly allowed a chance. Israel did not want to allow the return of Palestinian refugees because it would undermine their majority status and reduce their population. In a nutshell, after the Oslo Peace Accord More than seven years have gone by and Israel has security and administrative control of 61.2% of the West Bank and about 20% of the Gaza Strip and security control over another 26.8% of the West Bank. This control is what has enabled Israel to double the number of settlers in 10 years..and to seal an entire nation into restricted areas, imprisoned in a network of bypass roads meant for Jews only... (ifAmericansknew.com 2006) Why is there conflict between the two peoples (now) still in 2007! To a keen observer, it may be clear that there are no easy solutions to a problem of this
The Making of A Quagmire Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words
The Making of A Quagmire - Essay Example The government will not hesitate to invent a story to hide their cruel actions. I cite the example tendered by the author about ââ¬Å"Thich Quang Duc who had come to the square as part of Buddhist procession had been doused in sharp contrast to walking people around himâ⬠(113). The dubious version of the Government read thus: ââ¬Å"â⬠¦. ...that Quang ducââ¬â¢s fellow priest had set him on fire, and that he had been unable to feel any pain because he had been heavily dosed with morphineâ⬠(113-14) The real issue was the religious revolution in Vietnam. But for the press taking up the issue, America would have considered it as an act of terrorism. Politicians have just one agendaââ¬âselfishness and plans for aggrandizement of wealth and they will go to any extent to achieve their nefarious objectives. The citizens of a country therefore have a great responsibility. They need to remain ever vigilant and analyze the information with a correct perspective and take independent decisions. The published statements of the politicians may not be always authentic. 2. Madame Nhu is the important personality in the book, and this refers to the negative aspect of her personality. She stands apart from majority of the traditional Vietnamese women. She was crazy to be in the limelight and considered herself as the potential leader and was power-hungry. God had blessed her with beauty, wisdom, and power. The author writes, ââ¬Å"Madame Nhu was strikingly beautiful woman, and she was well aware of it; yet she looked too perfectly manicured, too much like someone who had just stepped out of a beauty shop, to be leading a country at warâ⬠(24). She was able to exert tremendous influence in Vietnam and NGO family. She was responsible for the oppression and death of many monks and her anti-Buddhist outbursts were famous. With her quixotic statements, she was able to exert great influence on Diem. Her hatred to Buddhism was open and intense. She commented upon the self-immolation of the Buddhist monk as a very normal ââ¬Å"barbecue.â⬠The author writes, ââ¬Å"To Madame Nhu this event was simply a barbecue and an affrontâ⬠(113). She was so cruel against the Buddhists that she expressed her views that she was willing to clap at such burning incidents. American President Robert Kennedy did not like her actions and in Vietnam, there was lots of internal discontent. American policy turned hostile towards Diem government and ultimately led to the coup of Duong Van Minhââ¬â¢s. 3. As for the Vietnam War, dual perspectives prevailed in America. The press was mostly on loggerheads with the Government on this issue. The press had no vested interest and I strongly feel that the Press was right. The correspondents were reporting from the actual battlefronts, with great danger to their personal safety and they were interested in reporting the truth about the war and its gruesome aspects. The American tax-payer was entitled to know the truth about the Vietnam War and the reality reports were forthcoming from the Press. On the other hand, the Government was giving only one side of the total picture that was convenient from their point of view. For instance relating to the battle of Ap Bac, America was hiding the vital information relating to American losses to suppress the anti-war sentiments of the American citizens, as would be read from the comments from Admiral Harry, as reported by the author: ââ¬Å"Yes, that's right. It was a Vietnamese victory. It certainly wasââ¬

Compare and contrast the book with other materials Essay
Compare and contrast the book with other materials - Essay Example d that women were underrepresented in the work place because most of the jobs in the factories require a lot of physical energy making women unfit for these jobs. However, today with the major advancements in technology, a lot of jobs do not call for physical energy. This means that both women and men work well without difficulties. However, it is observed that even in these jobs, women are still underrepresented. I agree with the author that there is need to increase the diversity in the workplace by having an equal representation of both genders. It is true that both men and women have their biological differences, this also influences their perspectives and this can be tapped to get better performance at the work place. Women are also the care givers and homemakers; this should not be used as an excuse of not giving them jobs. However, I tend to disagree with the author that men should not be obligated to support their spouses. This is because the systems that already exist favor the male gender and removal of spousal support would only make the situation of the women worse. There is a need to have a complete overhaul of the current system and ensure that women get equal opportunities as the men and they would be able to support themselves. The salaries also need to be harmonized because you would observe in many instances women are given lower wages and salaries despite performing similar tasks to their male counterparts. The letter from Birmingham jail by Martin Luther King Junior is a justification of the nonviolent action that was being taken by Luther follow in Birmingham. The clergymen in the south have termed the move as untimely and unwise. According to him, the measures that the back people were conducting in order to have their rights given to them is incomparable to the injustices that the whites had metered towards the blacks. He says that they had burned down their houses, enslaved them and the segregation in Birmingham was worse than any other
